What Is Patch Testing?

Patch testing is a procedure used by our technicians before applying hair colour to the scalp. It is a simple and safe way of identifying whether the hair dye that your stylist intends to use will cause an allergic reaction with your skin.

Is it really necessary?

Yes. Patch testing is essential to ensure that the active ingredients in our products do not cause an allergic reaction. National Hair & Beauty Federation rules around testing have tightened up in 2021 and we strongly advise you to be wary of any salon that does NOT carry out a Patch or Allergy Test.

Even if I’m having highlights or just my roots done?

Yes. Even with foil highlights a small amount of product can sometimes seep and reach the scalp and with regrowth work, we purposely try to get as close to the scalp as possible.

What does Patch Testing involve and how long does it take?

It takes just a few moments for us to apply a little patch of colour and test will usually be done 48 hours prior to the appointment. If the test produces a reaction on your skin, then the hair dye should not be applied. Prior to the test your stylist will ask you a few questions to ensure that it is safe for us to apply the colour sample to your skin for the patch test. We will apply a small amount of the hair dye mixture to the inside of your wrist or behind your ear, and advise that it should not be washed for the next 48 hours (unless an allergic reaction takes place).

Our salon is part of the National Hair & Beauty Federation which ensures that we are always up to date with the latest regulations regarding patch testing. The NHBF requires us to patch test our clients every SIX months. This is because new allergies can develop at anytime.

What are the risks?

Reactions are rare and usually result in a mild burning, itching,

blistering or swelling to the area where the patch test is applied.

What should I do if I have a reaction?

If you do have an allergic reaction to the patch test you will not be able to use any oxidation type hair dyes. Please inform us of your reaction immediately and do not book in any future colour appointments. You should also alert your doctor to let them know that you have had an allergic reaction.

Summary

Patch testing is an essential procedure to ensure the safe use of hair dye. Whilst we undertsand it may be a little inconvenient to visit your stylist 48 hours before your appointment, it is essential to ensure your safety.
