GREY AWAY

Everything you need to know about grey hair

and how to look 10 years younger

Why is my hair going grey?

It could be a number of reasons. 50% of all people will have a significant amount of grey hairs by the time they reach 50. Stress, genetics, Vitamin B-12 deficiency and smoking can also play a part. Melanin gives our hair its colour so when production reduces, hairs go a more transparent colour such as white or grey.

What should I do about it?

The important thing to know is that you have options. It may surprise you to learn that for some clients we advise going with it. Embrace your grey but support it with a great cut and pay extra attention to the condition of your hair.

For many, however, greying hair is simply unacceptable. There’s no denying, grey hair can make you look many years older than you actually are and if that’s happening to you, we have a range of ways to help. Aveda colours are especially good at covering grey and because they are plant based, they give a more natural looking result than other brands. It’s one of the reasons we love Aveda. We have both permanent and semi-permanent colour solutions.

I’m a man with grey hair, what are my options?

For gentlemen, a lot depends on your age and skin tone. Putting a full black colour on a man in his seventies would look striking but unnatural. Unless you are an Elvis Presley impersonator, this isn’t something we would recommend. We strongly advise not dying hair at home. We’re not saying home kits can’t work but choosing the right colour, the right product and having it applied and washed off in exactly the right way by a professional will unquestionably give you a better result. Your hair sends a strong signal about who you are. Don’t take a chance with it. If you do attempt a home kit and it goes horribly wrong, don’t panic. Call us to discuss our Colour Correction service.

For men, we generally advise matching your grey to your natural colour or a shade ot two lighter.  We also sometimes suggest leaving a few grey hairs at the sides. Ask your stylist about Aveda Natural Grey Blending. This simple five minute treatment can be added to your next cut. It won’t make your hair look ‘coloured' but it will tone down the grey for about four weeks. And if you like the results, we can discuss a more permanent fix.
